Dublin2Bike is in the centre of Dublin City, so unfortunately safety is key if you are going to leave the bike unattended on the streets which is not advisable at all really to be honest!
Bike locks are a funny one, they say you should spend 10% of the value of your bike on a lock, however it is always a trade of between weight and security, you’ve probably just spent lots of money on a really nice new light bike and you have to put this big heavy clunky lock on it to keep it safe! However with locks the trade off is that the heavier it is usually the safer it is, so it’s a bit of a catch 22 situation!
At Dublin2Bike we stock lots of lock through the brands Kryptonite, Hiplok, Masterlock and Abus locks which are all really strong solid and well known lock companies and have been around a long time.
Sold secure security system; Sold Secure is an independent, premier security testing and certification agency that rates all the locks in the world and gives them an insurance rating of either bronze, silver, gold or diamond more recently!
Hiplok are the newest and have come from like the New York Bike Messenger angle with sleek locks that can sit on your waistband to an all out range and our most popular selling lock of the year the Hiplok diamond rated lock @ €350! Which is the very top end in terms of price but being Diamond rated it is pretty much indestructable!
Kryptonite are only around about 20 years, an amazing name synoymous with Superman and that cuts through all marketing by the other brands and sears itself into peoples heads, they are our most popular selling lock brand by far, a super range from cables all the way up to it’s diamond lock which is more like for a motorbike with the weight of it but some people do use it for bikes too.
Masterlock have a huge range and go from a lower end to the high end, they do some cheaper cable lcoks for kids bikes and more budget friendly, all the brands adhere to the sold secure godl system but they all also have their own rating system from 1-10 or 1 – 20 which packaging will illuminate and again price will go up the higher it goes in terms of security.
Abus are another really well known german brand of lock, been around for hundreds of years and changing with the times but still has all the staples.
U-Locks, folding locks and cable locks; all have their uses and end user pros and cons and each situation or bike users needs are different, we have them all at Dublin2Bike and our sales team are always on hand to help you choose the right lock for you and your needs.
All of the brands above also have small café locks too for road bike spins to lock up outside the rest stop while keeping half an eye on it and another on that coffee!
Most bike locks have good brackets that can attach the lock to the bike for carrying on journeys which lessens the load, it’s a shame to have to have them but needs must.
Any questions on locks just let me know, Shane@dublin2bike.ie
