At Dublin2Bike we stock lots of Helmets! Breaking it down when buying a helmet I suppose you first need to look at what type of cycling you are doing, there’s commuter helmets, road bike helmets, TT, MTB, E-Bike, Kids and then through lots of brands, each brand is a little bit different so it can be a bit of a minefield!
Brands we stock here in Dublin2Bike are:
Bell, Giro, Lazer, Kask, Sweet Protection, Met, Woom, Bontrager and Endura, so we have something for everybody!
Then you have price points starting from around €50 is your standard Bell or Giro helmet, very well known and respected brands, right up to €275 for your top end Road bike helmet like the Met Manta or the Kask Protone and everything in between.
Other things to consider when buying a helmet are ventilation, style, colour – there’s a kind of trend towards white helmets right now – which is good as they are seen better than dark coloured ones, or you can go one step further and get like a two tone one which creates a zebra effect to be seen even better, or even further add helmet lights to your helmet. Then other factors to consider are; bulkiness, weight, feel, safety tech (like MIPS), style of straps, and of course value for money!
The rule of thumb is the more you spend the lighter they will get, the more sculpted they will feel on your head, but not necessarily any safer than anything from the entry level, they might have added MIPS added in which is a consideration for extra safety. Helmet sizes are general and quite broad, most people we see are a Medium, some men have Large sizes, kids and some females have Small head sizes, but once you’re around 7 years of age your head is fully formed and will dictate the size of your helmet forever!
However, The main thing is that you wear a helmet every time you get on a bike, it’s as simple as that, teach every kid to do the same, make it a habit, it is just so easy and makes you so much safer!
